Stratford schools collect 135,000 lids in bid to clean up recyclng
Taranaki school children have surpassed the wildest dreams of local council staff who set up a scheme to get rid of cream and milk bottle lids from Stratford's recycling collection. The lids are considered a contaminant because they are a different kind of plastic. Schools in the district collected a mammoth 135,694 lids - weighing in at more than 230 kilograms - over just 16 weeks.

An 11-year-old from Tauranga has become the youngest ever winner of the Hole in One Challenge at Lake Taupō, and is putting his $10,000 cash prize money towards a family vacation. Elijah Ellis told First Up he was shocked when it went in, while everyone around him started jumping up and down in excitement. It all started off as a pretty normal morning, with Elijah sharing a bucket of 50 balls with his dad, while his sister and mum watched on.
